The Role of Telemedicine in Healthcare in Turkey

Telemedicine, however, referred to as virtual care or e-health, is becoming increasingly popular in Turkey, as it revolutionizes the delivery of healthcare to citizens in need. Telemedicine is a type of digital technology that enables health care professionals to diagnose, consult and treat individuals using telecommunications.

Benefits of Telemedicine in Turkey

Telemedicine in Turkey is beneficial in terms of reducing healthcare costs, improving access to healthcare services and improving patient outcomes.

  • Reducing Healthcare Costs: Telemedicine reduces travel expenses for both the patient and the doctor. As the patient looks for consultation and treatment close to their home, money spent on travel is minimized. Also, the cost of providing a consult is reduced as the doctor’s time is more efficiently used.
  • Improving Access to Healthcare Services: Telemedicine makes healthcare more accessible and convenient. Patients can consult with their doctors at their convenience and in the comfort of their homes. This is especially beneficial for people in remote areas who do not have access to medical care.
  • Improving Patient Outcomes: Patients with chronic illnesses can be effectively monitored and managed through telemedicine. Along with accurate recording of patient data, telemedicine can be used to share information with other healthcare professional to provide an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan.

Challenges of Telemedicine in Turkey

Though telemedicine offer many advantages in Turkey, there are still some challenges that need to be addressed.

  • Poor Internet Connectivity: The biggest barrier to the implementation of telemedicine in Turkey is the low adoption of high-speed internet. Poorinternet connectivity could limit the effectiveness of some telemedicine services.
  • Lack of Adequate Training: There is a lack of adequate training and awareness of telemedicine amongst the healthcare providers of Turkey.
  • Lack of Standard Protocols and Regulations: Telemedicine requires regulations and standard protocols in order to ensure patient safety and privacy.

Conclusion

Though telemedicine has many benefits, there are still several challenges that need to be addressed in order for it to be successfully implemented in Turkey. Once these challenges are addressed, telemedicine could play a key role in improving access to healthcare services and reducing healthcare costs for citizens in need.
