Eye Diseases

The eyes are one of the most delicate and vital organs of the human body. Protective elements like eyelids, eyelashes and tears, work together to keep the delicate tissue of the eye safe from external harm. Unfortunately, from time to time, our eyes can be affected by a number of diseases, which can range from mild to severe. In some cases, timely treatment can help to prevent any permanent damage or vision loss.

Common Eye Diseases

Some of the most common and well known eye diseases include:

    • Conjunctivitis – a viral or bacterial infection, often known as ‘pink eye’, which causes redness and inflammation of the eye.
    • Cataracts – a clouding of the lens, which is the innermost part of the eye, which can lead to vision loss.
    • Glaucoma – a condition where the pressure within the eye gradually increases, resulting in damage to the optic nerve and vision loss.
    • Age-Related Macular Degeneration – a condition which affects the macula (a small area in the retina responsible for sharp vision) and can lead to severe vision loss, usually in older adults.

Prevention and Treatment

There are some measures that can be taken to reduce the risk of developing an eye disease:

    • Regular eye examinations.
    • Protective eyewear (sunglasses, safety glasses etc.).
    • Quitting smoking.
    • Eating a healthy diet, rich in fruits and vegetables.

It’s also important to seek medical advice if you notice any changes in the appearance or health of your eyes, as early treatment can be the key to preventing vision loss.
