What is Breast Augmentation and Lifting?

Breast augmentation, also referred to as augmentation mammoplasty, is a cosmetic procedure that involves using implants to make a woman’s breasts larger and fuller. Breast lifting, also known as mastopexy, is a procedure that reshapes the existing breasts by removing excess skin and repositioning the surrounding tissue.

Benefits of Breast Augmentation and Lifting

Women who undergo breast augmentation and lifting can benefit in the following ways:

    • Increased Confidence – Having larger and better shaped breasts can boost a woman’s self-esteem and confidence.
    • Improved Physical Appearance – Large and perky breasts can improve a woman’s overall physical appearance.
    • Elimination of Stretch Marks and Skin Discoloration – If the procedure is done correctly, excess skin can be removed and lift the breasts, thus reducing the appearance of stretch marks and discoloration.
    • Restoration of Breast After Pregnancy or Weight Loss – After pregnancy or weight loss, often times the breasts lose their shape and size. Breast augmentation and lifting can help to restore the breasts to their original shape and size.

Risks of Breast Augmentation and Lifting

As with any surgical procedure, there are risks associated with breast augmentation and lifting. These risks include, but are not limited to, the following:

    • Breast pain and complications from anesthesia
    • Infection
    • Scarring
    • Changes in nipple and breast sensation
    • Breast Implant Rupture – the outer shell of a breast implant may tear or rupture.

It is important to speak to a board-certified plastic surgeon who specializes in breast augmentation and lifting before undergoing the procedure. The surgeon can discuss the benefits and risks in greater detail and help a woman weigh her options.
